1/8/12 – 1/21/12

Our last weeks in Sydney were
spent making the most of our beach backyard in Manly, one last great day in the
city, and a big moving out BBQ/Beer Pong Tournament.
We lucked out with perfect
weather, and I mean PERFECT. We
enjoyed gorgeous sunny days, and booming thunderstorms every night allowing our
bodies to become golden bronze by day and not sweat in our hot rooms every
night. We no longer had to blast
our ceiling and portable fan making it nearly impossible to sleep from the
blaring rattling sound because the rain significantly cooled the nights
down. Sydney was treating us
right! Our days were spent making
use of the row of volleyball nets lining a section of Manly Beach. We met Jan and Lukas, our typical
volleyball competitors, everyday for three hours of non-stop beach volleyball.

We truly went out with a bang for our last day in the
city. I’d say it was pretty jam-packed… After taking our much loved ferry ride
from Manly to Circular Quay, taking in the colossal Harbour Bridge and the
iconic Opera House, we set off walking towards Darling Harbour. Darling Harbour possesses the biggest
Imax theatre in the world that Tommy had been set on going to since the very
first time we walked by it. To his
great luck, he received two movie tickets to the Imax from our good friend Gina
for his birthday. We caught the
10:30am showing of Happy Feet 2, and enjoyed the spectacular size and
atmosphere of the theatre. When
the movie got out we walked back towards Circular Quay and over to the Rocks
for lunch at a favorite Italian pizzeria of ours. The highlight of the day was seeing The Illusionist, a magic
show, in the Sydney Opera House.
That was on Tommy’s checklist of things to do in Sydney, and it worked
out perfectly! Our day did not end
here, but instead we met up with our good friend Gina for a fun night out in
the city! We caught the last ferry
back to Manly to end a perfect day.

Our Beer Pong Tourney/BBQ was the best going away
party EVER! USA vs. Australia vs.
England! We had a bunch of our
different friends over to our apartment, some American, some Australian, and
one couple from the UK. We brought
everyone together to say goodbye and leave them with a bit of our American
pride, and that meant teaching the Aussie’s how to play beer pong. What a success it was! The 12 of us feasted on our wings to
coat our stomachs before splitting up into 6 teams to compete in a
bracket. It was hilarious watching
the Aussie’s and the couple from the UK trying to understand this crazy US
drinking game, but they absolutely loved it. To keep everyone busy we started a game of flip cup off to
the side, blowing everyone’s minds with the games we Americans play in
college. Of course the Beer Pong
finals came down to the two American teams playing each other, no surprise! I could go on about the fun we had, but
I think we’ll just have to leave that up to your imaginations, and the empty
bottles of alcohol lying around our apartment…
Our last couple of nights in Manly were spent going
out to dinner with friends, and promising to come back and visit for a few
weekends!
It is bittersweet leaving Manly, but we are ready for
the next chapter in Australia: our adventure to Melbourne!
Quick Important Lesson: The pronunciation of Melbourne
It sounds like Mel-Bun, you do not pronounce the R so stop calling it Mel-Born!
We learned how to dry our clothes Aussie style.
We had many dinners with our American friend Gina!
We started reading the book A Sunburnt Country (Down Under) on the beach everyday with a glass of wine.
We wore the groovy 3D glasses at the IMAX.
The Opera House never gets old...
Neither does the Harbour Bridge...
Fun Night Out in the City.
WINNERS! TEAM AMERICA!
What better way to end a night than a midnight swim!
